Ok, so it’s the 11th day of the new year…
…where are you with your goals and resolutions thus far? Have you given up already or are you making your way toward your accomplishments day by day?
I have written before and I will write it again, we are rounding the corner to the 17th of January, which is “Ditch Your New Years Resolution Day”. Have you missed a day at the gym or eaten a doughnut when you promised you wouldn’t? Did you spend that extra cash or keep it in savings? Did you take away from your debt or add to it?
You know, it’s okay to have missed a day or eaten a little extra so long as you stay focused on the big picture. When I began training for multi-sport event over 10 years ago, my coaches would tell me, “If you miss a day, skip it. Don’t try to make up for it. Just don’t make a habit of it.” The reason for this is quite simple, if you try to make up for a day missed, you end up in a cycle of workout debt, which burns you out and demotivates you, ultimately causing you to quit entirely.
This is good place to also note that as we work toward our accomplishments, we are also working toward habit changes. Habits take time to change, and as you may have noticed, that change doesn’t happen overnight. Yes, there are some of you with strict discipline to make these changes happen quicker than others, and I applaud your efforts. However, for the rest of us, we need to make smaller steps that will lead us toward our accomplished goals.
For those who need more time, take it. At the top of the mountain, you will simply find another, taller mountain to climb. So, enjoy the journey as you make your way to each peak. You’ve got this! If you need a little more encouragement or even an accountability partner, know you have one in me.
